Tasca Loses Shelby vs. Shelby Battle at Heartland Park-Topeka after Best Qualifying Outing of the Year

Hot-cool-hot-cool track conditions had crew chiefs guessing and tires smoking at the Dollar General NHRA Summernationals at Heartland Park-Topeka on Sunday.

After successfully navigating the hot/cold conditions Friday and hot conditions again Saturday, Bob Tasca III and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang Funny Car team faced both in the same day on race day.

Guided by crew chiefs Dickie Venables, Chris Cunningham and Marc Denner, the team advanced out of Round 1 with a 4.150-second pass at 310.70 mph to Bob Bode’s 6.752 at 107.50 before facing Shelby teammate Tim Wilkerson in Round 2.

Tasca had a .017-second advantage off the starting line, but the trouble started early for the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang. By the 60-foot mark it was .025 behind Wilkerson, who carried the Shelby banner into the semifinals.

“We were confident after qualifying No. 2 and hoped we could win this one for our friend Carroll Shelby, but I guess it wasn’t in the cards for us this time,” Tasca said. “We’ll keep working on this Motorcraft/Quick Lane Funny Car and head to Englishtown.
