Steve Torrence attempted to overcome a faulty throttle cable and a sometimes cantankerous race car during his four qualifying runs in the Arizona Nationals at Firebird Raceway Friday and Saturday.
He produced his best 1,000-foot elapsed time of 3.883 seconds at 308.00 mph on his final run Saturday afternoon in the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top fuel dragster. He then watched several minutes later as he was bumped from the final starting berth by a slim margin of nine-thousandths of a second.
“We are very disappointed,” Torrence remarked. “The broken throttle cable couldn’t have come at a worse time because the car was on a very good run. But that’s the way this sport is. Anything can happen.
“We do have a few weeks to figure out just what happened and get ready to get back on the winning track at Gainesville (Fla., March 15-7).”
