Doug Kalitta, a 48-year old resident of Ann Arbor, Mich., and driver of the Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster, has amassed 32 NHRA Top Fuel title trophies in 65 final-round appearances. He has finished in the top ten in Mello Yello championship points in every season of his 16-year straight-line career. He was the 1994 USAC National Sprint Car champion. This weekend, with his Mac Tools team’s motto of, “It’s Time To Make Our Champion A Champion Again,” Kalitta and the rest of the stars of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series embark on the 2013 season at the famed Winternationals in Pomona, Calif.
Kalitta’s racing journey in Pomona has also been filled with many highlights. He won the series-opening race in 2009 and followed that with another final round appearance in 2010. He owns two No. 1 qualifying positions at the Auto Club Raceway of Pomona, including the beginning race of the season in 2004, which gave him yet another final round appearance.
Kalitta’s Top Fuel machine will again adorn the colors of Mac Tools for the full season in 2013, after Mac Tools returned to the team in a primary position at Indy in 2012. The Mac Tools team led by Jim Oberhofer is excited to begin another great Top Fuel season and continue Kalitta’s run of 16 consecutive top ten appearances.
After leading testing, Kalitta will get to try that setup for the first time in race conditions for the 2013 Mello Yello season at 3 p.m. on Valentine’s Day. After the one session of nitro qualifying on Thursday, Kalitta, Alexis DeJoria, David Grubnic and Del Worsham will be doing a Tequila Patron bottle signing and autograph session at the Finish Line Bar & Grill onsite at the Auto Club Raceway of Pomona following the nitro qualifying. If you are planning on attending the Winternationals, please make plans to attend this great meet and greet opportunity.
