Steve Torrence didn’t waste any time Friday, recording excellent numbers on both his 1,000-foot qualifying runs for Sunday’s Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals in warm temperatures at Atlanta Dragway.
He saved his best for the second lap – 3.827seconds at 320.74 mph – in the Torrence Racing/Capco Contractors Inc. Top Fuel dragster and left the track with the No. 2 provisional position just a few ticks behind Tony Schumacher’s track record 3.815.
“Richard (Hogan, team crew chief) did a good job,” Torrence said. “He’s had the car at the top of the pack for the last three or four races . . . and we are picking up bonus points (for qualifying in the top three), too.”
Torrence, who was the No. 2 qualifier at Houston last week, also picked up his coveted first low-qualifier award at Charlotte last month.
He will attempt to improve Friday’s performance in Saturday’s two qualifying runs.
