The first day of the Dollar General NHRA Summernationals concluded on a positive note for NTB/Service Central Funny Car driver Johnny Gray. In the first session, Gray was an efficient 4.191, 297.48 mph at the finish line, and in the second round of qualifying, the Artesia, N.M.-based pilot wheeled the Dodge Charger to an improved 4.105, 310.13 for the provisional No. 5 spot.
“This Service Central racecar, she’s struttin’ back to us,” said a grinning Gray of the NTB/Service Central car that has been gaining momentum after a rough patch earlier in the year, and after reading the data from the run, crew chief Rob Wendland was pleased as well.
“What we’re doing is gaining more knowledge about the new tune-up that we developed in testing after Houston and then continued to work on in Atlanta,” said Wendland, referencing the last two Full Throttle Series events.
“We’re logging more runs in our run book, and with that, we’re regaining confidence. We left a lot on the table, and it’s very hard to back it down like that, but we need to learn how to race this thing. That last pass was the smoothest we’ve seen yet, and that was very encouraging.”
Gray will have two chances to improve tomorrow on day two of the Dollar General NHRA Summernationals at Heartland Park Topeka.
