Massey, Prestone team ready to give it all they've got during Traxxas Shootout, U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis

When Spencer Massey straps in his 8,000-horsepower Prestone/FRAM Top Fuel dragster he always gives it 100 percent.

But Massey thinks 100 percent won't be enough when it comes to the most prestigious race on the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series tour. This year, the U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway near Indianapolis is even bigger with the addition of the Traxxas Nitro Shootout on Saturday when Massey will be one of eight drivers trying to win $100,000.

"Obviously it's a huge weekend for a number of reasons," Massey said. "We've got the Traxxas Shootout and it's the U.S. Nationals. The shootout field is extremely tough. So the Traxxas Shootout field is the best of the best. It's going to be anyone's game."

Massey thinks crew chiefs Todd Okuhara and Phil Shuler have the right plan when it comes to the race within a race.

"We tested last week (at Indy) and were trying to get data and get ahead of the game. Everything went great during testing. Todd is extremely happy. Whenever he's saying that he's pleased that means he's learned a lot and he's happy with how the car is running.

"We're going to go out the for the Shootout and basically take all of our great performances from all year long and bottle it into three runs in a row so we can get that $100,000."

But more important to Massey than the money is to earn an NHRA Wally trophy for winning the most prestigious title of the year.

"Come Monday (for eliminations) it's game on. We want to win the U.S. Nationals. That's our main concern. I've never done it before. I've never even been to a final round there. We need to go rounds, get points and get that win."

With a season's worth of momentum behind the team, including four wins in six final-round appearances, they will be giving all they can when the race known as "The Big Go" kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday with the first qualifying session.

"This is what it's all about," he said. "All year long we've been running well. We've set track records, we've set speed records. This is for all the marbles. We're putting everything into it. Our Prestone/FRAM guys are putting in 125 percent; we're going for it."

MASSEY, NEFF, NOBILE, HINES CLAIM VICTORIES AT SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT NHRA NATIONALS IN NORWALK

Spencer Massey raced to his fourth Top Fuel victory of the season Sunday at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park.

Mike Neff (Funny Car), Vincent Nobile (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners at the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event.

Massey powered his FRAM/Prestone dragster to his first Norwalk win with a quicker reaction time at the start to hold off the quicker, but losing Capco Contractors dragster of final round opponent Steve Torrence. With the victory, Massey returns to the series points lead.

“I knew the final round was going to be huge," said Massey. "Steve was running awesome all day. He’s been running awesome all season, actually. I’m from Texas, he’s from Texas, and we both drove Top Alcohol Dragsters in Division 4. The weather here was even hot like it is in Texas."

In Funny Car, Neff claimed his second win of the season and second at this track by defeating Tim Wilkerson in the final round. Neff drove his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang to a performance of 4.217 seconds at 298.21 to hold off Wilkerson's Levi, Ray & Shoup Mustang.

“I don’t know how it all works, but Norwalk has definitely been good to me," Neff said. "We’ve done fairly well on the hotter racetracks. We usually do pretty well on those. And sometimes it just seems like you go some places that you just always do well at, and then there are some tracks you go to and it just seems like you can never do any good no matter how you’ve been doing up to that point. Tim Wilkerson put up a heck of a run over there. It had to be very close at the finish line, so it was just our day.”

In Pro Stock, Nobile celebrated an NHRA Sweep in the winner’s circle after claiming his second win of the season. In the final round, he powered his Mountain View Tire Dodge Avenger to a performance of 6.661 seconds at 208.01 mph to defeat the Summit Racing Chevy Camaro of defending world champ Jason Line. Nobile also defeated Line in the final of Saturday's K&N Horsepower Challenge.

With the victory, Nobile claimed more than $100,000 for the weekend, as he also won the $50,000 K&N Horsepower Challenge race on Saturday, claimed $25,000 for the race win and another $25,000 for an NHRA Sweep Bonus for winning both events during the weekend. He also won here in 2011.

“I never thought in a million years that things would be going like this," said Nobile. "My team supplied me with the fastest car today, and I have to give them the credit. [The semifinal win over Allen Johnson] was the coolest round I ever won in my life. I saw Jason Line and Shane Gray get in a pedaling match in front of me, so I mentally prepared myself for that situation. Luckily, my dad [John] taught me how to drive and told me to find fifth gear as soon as possible if I ever had to lift and saw that the other guy wasn’t in front of me. I felt like Ron Capps in the car.

"The best part of the weekend was getting Peggy [Coleman], my partner in the K&N Horsepower Challenge, that Toyota Tundra. She was in a terrible situation where she lost her house, and it was great to give something back to her."

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, three-time world champ Hines claimed his third win of the season on  his Screamin' Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson with a performance of 6.929 at 193.43 in the final round against opponent Hector Arana Jr. , who rode his Lucas Oil Buell.  Hines is the first rider to win three times at Norwalk ( also 2009, 2007). It was Hines’ 28th career victory.

“It was a good weekend all around for our team, and we just treated it like we did in Joliet last weekend when I got the national event win,” said Hines, who remained in second place in the points standings. “We just slowly picked way at the tune-up. Conditions changed tremendously today. The air dried out a lot, and we struggled a little bit with my bike the first couple rounds, but we learned a lot against Eddie [Krawiec, teammate] in the semifinals, and luckily I was able to get the eight-thou win against Eddie in the semifinals and learned everything we possibly could and applied that to the final. That was our best speed of the weekend and our best e.t. of the weekend. It was a heck of a race with Hector Jr. I beat him on a holeshot in Houston, and that was huge, and to do it again is ‘ice cream’ on the cake.”

Massey seeks perfection with FRAM/Prestone dragster, hopes to improve last year's Norwalk finish by one spot

Spencer Massey believes practice makes perfect.

In the short week between two NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series events, Massey was at Don Schumacher Racing headquarters in Brownsburg, Ind., Monday practicing his reaction times.

"You can never get enough practice," Massey said while seated in the cockpit of his dragster parked inside the DSR shop while wearing his FRAM firesuit and using a simulated starting system. "I always want to be better than anyone else at this. I don't like getting left on."

Massey and his team head to Norwalk, Ohio, this weekend for the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals for the 12th of 23 events on the Full Throttle schedule.

Massey, who has won three event titles this season, has always been touted as one of the best "leavers" in the business and he's not ready to let that go. He is determined to better his times.

"My crew chiefs Phil (Shuler) and Todd (Okuhara), and all of the guys on this FRAM, team always strive to be perfect in what they do, and for me it's no different.

"The competition in Top Fuel this year is one of the toughest we've ever seen in the class. It seems like all of the drivers have stepped up their game and that's all I'm trying to do too. The only way you're going to get better at something is to practice, so that's why I'm doing this."

Last year at Summit Motorsports Park, Massey had a near perfect weekend. This year he's hoping to bring the Wally trophy home that eluded him last year.

"We were runner-up there last year," he said. "In 2009 I made it to the semifinals and last year I was the runner-up, so I think next in order would be to win the event, right?"

Massey goes in to the Norwalk, Ohio, event third in the points standings and only 11 behind points-leader and DSR teammate Tony Schumacher. Massey is eight behind Antron Brown, another teammate who ranks second. The three DSR dragsters have won six of the first 11 events this season.

"It's awesome that our Don Schumacher Racing teams hold those top three spots, but it would be even more awesome if my name was at the top. Hopefully we can make that happen this weekend."

Massey hopes to return to winning ways in FRAM dragster as NHRA tour heads to Route 66 Raceway at Joliet

Spencer Massey never ventures far from drag racing. Even when he has a weekend off from his 8,000-horsepower FRAM/Prestone Top Fuel Dragster, you can find Massey at a racetrack somewhere.

Last weekend Massey was in Tulsa, Okla., helping friend Chase Copeland at an NHRA division race.

"I just always enjoy being at the track," said Massey. "It doesn't matter what I'm doing, just being at the track makes me happy. Chase didn't exactly have the weekend we had hoped for, but any time I can be at a racetrack it's my happy place."

Massey will return to his happy place this weekend when the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing tour stops at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., the site of Massey's first win in 2009.

"It's always nice to go back to a track that you've won at," said the 29-year-old. "But that one was really special because it was my first one in an NHRA Top Fuel Dragster. You never forget your first win.

"I beat Antron (Brown) in the final there in 2009. I doubt I was thinking then that he would one day be my teammate, so that's pretty awesome."

Not only the site of Massey's first win, Route 66 Raceway also serves as the home track for team owner Don Schumacher, who resides outside of Chicago.

"It would be very cool to get Don a Wally at the event so close to his home," said Massey. "That would be really awesome to be able to hand Don a trophy on Sunday afternoon."

Massey has three wins so far this season and is second in Top Fuel points after losing the lead to DSR teammate Tony Schumacher two weeks ago at Bristol, Tenn.

"Not only would we like to get another win under our belts, but we really want to get back around our teammate Tony that top spot in points," said Massey.

"I know you just need to be at the top spot at the end of the season when all is said and done, but I love seeing my name with a '1' in front of it at any point in the season."

Superlative effort makes FRAM/Prestone quickest ever in Top Fuel, but Massey wants to focus on winning titles

Becoming the "quickest ever" to go along with already being the "fastest ever" wasn't enough to make Spencer Massey and the FRAM/Prestone Top Fuel Dragster team smile as they left Englishtown, N.J., two weeks ago.

Completing a qualifying run in 3.728 seconds at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park made Massey and crew chiefs Todd Okuhara and Phil Shuler the quickest trio ever in the Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.

The team became the fastest ever (332.18 mph) in April at zMAX Dragway at Concord, N.C.

But the FRAM/Prestone team, the current Top Fuel points leader with a series-best three titles, had every reason to expect to race for a fourth title at Englishtown, where they were the reigning champions. However, they were sidelined in the semifinals when Steve Torrence left first and held on to beat Massey by one-thousandth of a second and mere inches.

Massey, usually the first to react to the starting-line Christmas tree, was reeling from the outcome.

"That's a tough one to get over," Massey said. "I just feel bad because I let down my Prestone/FRAM team. These guys always give it 100 percent and I let them down."

The team, however, didn't feel that way. They know Massey's reaction times have bailed them out numerous times.

What was reinforced at Englishtown is the unlimited potential of the FRAM/Prestone team.

"This is one great car that Phil and Todd have put together, and it will win a lot more than it loses," Massey said of the team what has only lost six of its 26 races during elimination rounds.

NHRA pro racers to hit a different lane June 5, join bowlers to raise money for Riley Kids

There is a winner and a loser in each drag race and bowing match.

But on June 5 when some of world's top professional drag racers join with the Indianapolis bowling community and race fans at Royal Pin's Western Bowl in Indianapolis, there won't be any losers.

And the big winner will be the Riley Hospital for Children and Riley Children's Foundation.

The fourth annual DSR Bowling for Children fundraiser presented by NAPA will be at Royal Pin's Western Bowl center at 6441 W. Washington St. near Indianapolis.

"DSR drivers compete fiercely against Morgan Lucas, Brandon Bernstein, Shawn Langdon, Tony Pedregon and all our NHRA rivals but, for one night in June, we'll all be on the same team in supporting the kids and families who trust Riley Hospital for Children to provide unequalled medical care," said Mike Lewis, senior vice president of DSR.

"We are proud to contribute the proceeds from our two annual DSR fundraising events to the Riley Hospital Foundation."

DSR also has an open-house and car show at its Brownsburg headquarters during the U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway Park in Clermont.

In six years, DSR has raised over $150,000 for the Riley Children's Foundation.

Leading the roster of sports celebrities at the event will be NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series stars, including:

Don Schumacher Racing's Antron Brown (Matco Tools/Aaron's Dream Machine Top Fuel Dragster), Ron Capps (NAPA AUTO PARTS Funny Car) and Spencer Massey (FRAM/Prestone Top Fuel Dragster); Morgan Lucas Racing's Brandon Bernstein (Lucas Oil/MAV TV Top Fuel Dragster) and Morgan Lucas (Geico Top Fuel Dragster); Al-Anabi Racing's Shawn Langdon; and Screamin' Eagle Vance and Hines Harley-Davidson Pro Stock Motorcycle riders Andrew Hines and Eddie Krawiec.

The Riley Children's Foundation receives all proceeds from the tournament that will feature the fun No-Tap scoring format where nine pins down on the first ball also scores as a strike.

The event begins with dinner at 6 p.m. followed at 7:15 p.m. with driver introductions and bowling begins 15 minutes later.

All entries include VIP access to the Hall of Fame private room for dinner, soft drinks and time to mingle with the NHRA stars for autographs and photo opportunities. A cash bar will be available.

A silent auction will feature a variety of drag racing memorabilia and merchandise including a 52- and 62-inch HD TV donated by Aaron's.

The entry fee is $50 per bowler, and teams of four or individuals are welcome. Non-bowling spectator admission is $10 and one child 12 and younger will be admitted free with a paying adult. Bowling shoe rental is an additional $3.
