Shelby Revives Legendary “Pocket Rocket” and Ups It’s Muscle Car Game 

Shelby American, Inc., a division of Carroll Shelby International (CSBI.PK), unveiled today its new 850 horsepower 2013 Shelby GT500 Super Snake “Wide Body” as well as the new performance tuned Shelby Focus ST  at the North American International Auto Show. The two cars represent bookends in the lineup of high performance vehicles available from Shelby American.                                          

“Carroll Shelby’s innovative and aggressive hot-rodder spirit lives on at Shelby American today. ” said John Luft, president of Shelby American. “His Cobra redefined the sports car genre and then Shelby turned what some called a ‘secretary’s car’, the Mustang, into the fire-breathing GT350. A few years later, Shelby practically invented the American ‘Pocket Rocket’ with the four-cylinder turbocharged, front wheel drive Shelby GLH. This year, we’re returning to our roots with a pair of game-changing cars that will rewrite the rules for American performance.”

Shelby American takes the stock 662 horsepower 2013 GT500 and boosts its performance to a street-legal 850 horsepower while keeping it 50 state emissions legal and tuned on 91 octane pump gas. Adding Shelby’s new “Wide Body” option puts all that power to the pavement, and the rest is history. 

“Now with 13 inch rear and 10 inch front wheels that are wrapped in serious rubber, the car launches and handles like the super car it is,” added Gary Davis, vice president of production at Shelby American. “The optional wide body package isn’t just a cosmetic change, it now gives the Super Snake much more traction and makes it easy to exploit the Shelby’s potential right past the competition.”

Customers can choose between Satin Black, Gloss White, Silver, Blue and Red stripes. Offered now for the first time, wheel options include a rear-only or front and rear “wide body” packages.

Even though the new “Wide Body” Super Snake will have the chops to lead the muscle car pack, it is the return of Carroll Shelby’s beloved “Pocket Rocket” that may be the biggest news in Detroit.

“Carroll Shelby ignored critics who said the turbo four Omni couldn’t be an affordable performance car in the 1980s,” noted Gary Patterson, vice president of Operations/Sales. “He proved them wrong with an impressive, lightweight four cylinder performer. Designed in the Shelby skunkworks and tested extensively at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the front wheel drive Shelby Focus ST is a driver-focused masterpiece of performance with a budget minded price.

New Ford Racing suspension pieces lower the car while the wheels and tires improve grip and traction. The bigger Shelby spec brakes with drilled rotors enhance the stopping power, while the sound of the Shelby/Borla exhaust makes it uniquely Shelby. Inside, the car has a complete Shelby branded custom interior, Shelby shifter and finished off with the unique Shelby CSM badge. On the outside, the Shelby is easily identified by its functional hood vents, hydro-carbon front and rear grille inserts, Shelby lettering and rear Hydro-carbon spoiler. Three visual graphics packages are offered, ranging from “traditional” Shelby stripes to more edgy Shelby checkered flag splash or competition graphics.  Under the hood, Shelby American adds stylish hydro-carbon components and is developing an optional performance tune expected to significantly increase horsepower.

The post-title package for the 2013 Shelby GT500 Super Snake starts at $28,995 (662 hp) and $39,995 (850 hp). The “Wide Body” option adds another $17,995, not including the base GT500.  The 2013 Shelby Focus ST post-title package begins at $14,995 not including the Ford Focus ST and will be limited to 500 per model year.

One-of-a-Kind Ford Shelby GT500 Cobra Tribute Car to Cross the Block at 2013 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction

• Unique 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Cobra will cross the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car auction block in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Jan. 19

Ford announced today the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 Cobra, which was unveiled in 2012 to honor the late Carroll Shelby, will cross the auction block on Jan. 19, during the 2013 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car event in Scottsdale, Ariz. Proceeds from the sale of the tribute car will benefit JDRF, the leading funder of type 1 diabetes (T1D) research.

The tribute car was unveiled by Ford Motor Company board member Edsel B. Ford II, Ford executive vice president for Global Marketing, Sales and Service, Jim Farley, and Shelby American President John Luft at the 2012 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in August 2012. The Shelby Cobra was the featured marque of the international event.

“Carroll Shelby was an amazing individual who was an inspiration to anyone who loves performance,” said Farley. “He continued to be very involved in the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 until his passing. During the development of the GT500, Carroll mentioned he would love to build a wide body Mustang one day. We incorporated this feature into the tribute car to fulfill Carroll’s wish. This tribute car connects the glorious past Shelby shared with Ford to the bright future he helped create with the current-generation GT500.”

Beginning with a 662-horsepower 2013 Ford Shelby GT500, a group known as the “Friends of Carroll” created a one-of-a-kind GT500 Cobra wide-body car. Generating more than 850 horsepower with a Ford Racing 4.0-liter Whipple supercharged V8 engine, the car requires 13-inch-wide rear wheels wrapped in massive 345-section high-performance tires for extra grip.

Ford teamed up with Shelby American for several key components on the Carroll Shelby tribute car. Shelby American provided a specially designed hood, rear wide-body kit, Shelby Wilwood brakes and new 20x13-inch rear and 20x10-inch front wheels. The bodywork is finished in the same Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White stripes that graced many Cobra roadsters built in the 1960s.

After its unveiling in Monterey, the car was driven that weekend on the track by Henry Ford III with Aaron Shelby, grandson of Carroll Shelby, in the passenger seat to demonstrate the ongoing connection between the Ford and Shelby families. Then, the tribute car toured the United States, including appearances at SEMA, Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas and other high-profile events. It appeared in countless magazines and newspapers and on automotive media sites internationally.

For more than half a century, Carroll Shelby motivated people throughout the extended Ford family to achieve great success. Countless engineers crossed paths with Shelby over the years, from those who were involved with the GT40 to those working on the 2013 Shelby GT500. At the age of 88, Carroll Shelby spent five hours driving the latest Shelby GT500 during engineering validation sessions at Sebring and the Arizona Proving Grounds in late 2011.

“While Carroll Shelby is no longer with us, his spirit lives on with the designers and engineers he touched over the years,” said Farley. “He will continue to influence Ford performance cars for many years to come.”

A designer’s labor of love, a "one-of-one" 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 will be offered on Friday, Jan. 18, at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Ariz.  The auction will be televised on Speed TV.

The car has been signed by Edsel B. Ford II, William C. Ford, Jr., and Alan Mulally, CEO of Ford Motor Company.

The Mustang is the creation of Ford designer Melvin Betancourt, a former cardiac patient who feels that he owes his life to a dedicated team of heart surgeons at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. To show his appreciation for the care he received many years ago, Betancourt focused his talents on creating the special edition Shelby GT500 to benefit the Edith and Benson Ford Heart & Vascular Institute at the hospital.

Betancourt’s Shelby stays true to the spirit of the original, but with a modern, sophisticated level of performance and appearance. It is finished in a special white exterior paint scheme, with contrasting white graphics and 20” white wheels.

The racing-inspired cockpit features white leather Recaro seats with black stitching.

The Mustang has 662 horsepower, and a top speed of more than 200 mph. 

It is estimated that the car will sell between $150,000 and $250,000.

BARRETT-JACKSON TO SELL RARE ‘67 SHELBY GT500 SURVIVOR CAR AT NO RESERVE AT UPCOMING SCOTTSDALE AUCTION

One of the rarest Shelby Mustangs in the world, a survivor ’67 GT500 (Lot  5024) will be sold at No Reserve during the 2013 Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., on January 19, 2013. With only 9,841 miles on the odometer, it may be the lowest mileage ‘67 GT500 in existence.   

The Shelby is owned by Stephen Becker, president and CEO of Planet Cobra. He specializes in offering 1965 – 1970 Shelby Mustangs to clients internationally. He and Shelby expert Jim Cowles will be on-site to answer questions about the car and meet with individuals and discuss the vintage Shelby market.

“This car was one of the first GT500’s ever produced by Shelby American,” said Becker. “From its design and performance to its heritage and history, there’s truly nothing like it. It is a testament to the uniqueness of this special survivor Shelby that Barrett-Jackson will feature it as they honor Carroll Shelby this year.”

Barrett-Jackson plans to honor the late Mr. Shelby, who died in May 2012, with a party commemorating what would have been his 90^th birthday on January 11. The car has an intriguing history. In 1966, Edward Milkos decided to order the ’67 Shelby for drag racing.  After the car was delivered on February 27, 1967, he spent the next two years competing in races. Unfortunately, his amateur racing career ended when he suffered a serious injury. By the time Milkos healed, fuel prices had raised dramatically and the car was stored in his basement.

Thirty years later, Milkos traded in the Shelby for a late model car. This GT500 is a Nightmist Blue with black interior, a color combination highly desired by collectors. It is loaded with a 428 Police Interceptor engine and a dual four-barrel carburetion. The car has its original paint, wheel, tires and drive-train. It includes all original documentation including New Jersey license plates and a 1970 inspection sticker.

Displayed at the Shelby Headquarters in Las Vegas, the GT500 went on tour in 2010. It was one of 20 vehicles invited to the Shelby tribute at the Quail in Monterey and appeared at the SAAC convention.

“This original, unrestored, well documented, all-matching numbers vehicle is one of the rarest Shelby’s ever built,” noted Becker. “This low mileage Shelby still has its original engine, transmission and rear end. Ford Motor Company today announced the company’s complete line of 2013 model year performance vehicles will be on display and available for ride-and-drives during the Fifth Annual Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Collector Car Auction, scheduled Sept. 20-22, 2012, at the luxurious Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. This will be the first time the public can get behind the wheel of Ford newest performance vehicles, including 2013 models of the Focus ST, Shelby GT500 and Boss 302. In addition, Ford fans will have an opportunity to test-drive the 2012Mustang, Focus and Fiesta on a closed circuit during the three-day auction.

“The cars we’re bringing to the Barrett-Jackson auction in Las Vegas will be a real adrenaline rush for performance enthusiasts,” said Steve Ling, Ford North America Car Marketing manager. “What’s more exciting is this is the first time we’ve had all of these cars together for the public to experience. Friends of Carroll Shelby, including Ford Motor Company, Shelby American, Ford Racing and many others, have built a special tribute 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra. Ford is also announcing a renamed road in Dearborn, Mich., at the Product Development Center as a tribute to the late Carroll Shelby. Cobra has been the performance label as Shelby worked with Ford for most of the last 60 years. Shelby was instrumental in the establishment of Ford performance including the Cobra, GT40 and Mustang’s performance credentials since its earliest days in the mid-1960s.

“You might also know that Carroll was a philanthropist, noted for supporting causes that moved him,” added Farley. “In that spirit, this car will be taken on tour around the country, and hopefully will be used in a special way at the end of its tour, a way Carroll would appreciate.”

Before the 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra hits the road, it will be shown at the Ford display in the expo area this weekend.

Carroll Shelby Way

For more than half a century, Carroll Shelby inspired designers and engineers throughout the extended Ford family. As a teenager, Edsel Ford II worked for Shelby doing a variety of jobs including cleaning transmission parts.

Countless engineers crossed paths with Shelby over the years, from those who crafted the original GT40 to those working on the 2013 Shelby GT500. Up until his death, Carroll Shelby remained committed to developing great performance cars. Even at the age of 88, he spent more than five hours driving the most powerful production Mustang ever during engineering validation sessions at Sebring and the Arizona Proving Grounds in late 2011.

During and after test sessions, Carroll would spend hours discussing with the engineers what he liked and what needed improvement. No one who worked with Carroll will ever forget it, and his lessons in vehicle dynamics will be passed along to coming generations.

Ford product development engineers will now get a daily reminder of Carroll’s way as they traverse the newly renamed Carroll Shelby Way through the heart of the Product Development Center in Dearborn, Mich., to the entrance of the proving ground.

Carroll Shelby is no longer with us, but his spirit lives on with the designers and engineers he interacted with over the years and he will continue to influence Ford performance cars for many years to come.

Kenny Brown Light-Weight Radiator Core Support for 2005-2013 Mustang and Shelby GT500

Kenny Brown has released his NEW Light-Weight Radiator Core Support designed to fit all 2005-2013 Mustangs, Boss 302 and Shelby GT500.  The new core support is another addition to Kenny's popular AGS 4.0 line of chassis and suspension components designed to add strength and reduce weight.

“Our new Light-Weight Radiator Core Support is another product of our GT-4 Mustang development program, according to Kenny Brown.  It's another great way to shed a few pounds on the front of the car and gain some strength for the track, but we also designed it for street use so all of the factory bracing and sway bar brackets fit through 2013".

The Light-Weight Radiator Core Support is designed to replace the factory component and is a bolt-on part that requires no modifications.  The new core support also allows for use of the factory support bracing used on 2011-2013 model Mustangs, equipped with electronic steering. Tubular design also allows for a considerable reduction in weight over the factory stamped steel support, and helps to further improve the weight balance of the car.  The assembly is manufactured from high-grade steel, finished in a durable powder coating, and includes all required hardware.

SHELBY AMERICAN’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR RIG ROLLS SOUTH FOR MID-AMERICA FORD SHELBY NATIONALS AND SCAT EVENTS

Shelby American, a wholly owned subsidiary of Carroll Shelby International Inc. (CSBI.PK), will roll its 50th Anniversary Tour rig into Tulsa, Okla. June 13-17, for the 38th Annual Mid-America Ford Shelby Nationals.  Then it is southbound to Carroll Shelby’s native state of Texas for the Shelby Cobra Association of Texas and Legacy Texas Bank Car Show on June 30 in Dallas.

“The Mid-America Ford Shelby Nationals is one of the most important Shelby and Ford enthusiast events in the world,” said John Luft, president of Shelby American. “We’re bringing the 50th Anniversary Shelby GT500 Super Snake, GT350 and GTS to display. Best of all, we’ll be showcasing the most powerful Shelby ever created. This will be the first appearance in the Midwest of Carroll’s final masterpiece, the Shelby 1000.”

The Mid-America Ford Shelby Nationals will feature track sessions and a cruise to the Brady District for food, fun and cars.  It will finish with a display of Ford and Shelby vehicles at Sunday’s “Show-N-Shine” car show.

Two weeks later, Shelby American will point the 50th Anniversary Tour rig south and head to the Lone Star State for the Shelby Cobra Association of Texas and Legacy Texas Bank Car Show on June 30 in Dallas.  Everyone is invited to come out and celebrate Carroll’s life at this one-day, action-packed event to honor the man that started it all and raise money for the Carroll Shelby Foundation and Holy Angels Residential Facility.

Throughout the day, enthusiasts can participate in several different activities including a morning car show for all Shelby makes and models with a moment of silence at noon to recognize Carroll, a silent auction and evening banquet at Sam Pack’s Auto Museum.  The banquet will feature special guest speakers from Shelby American with the 50^th Anniversary display set up outside the museum.  Attendance to the Legacy Bank show is free, while a ticket is required for the banquet.

“We’re pleased to be able to add Dallas to the list of stops for the Shelby American 50^th Anniversary Tour,” said Luft.  “Carroll always had a special place in his heart for Texas, and we know he’ll be smiling down as hundreds of Shelby enthusiasts pay honor and tribute to him.”

Newest Shelby Performance Parts Crank up Horsepower for GT500

Shelby Performance Parts, a division of Shelby American, a wholly owned subsidiary of Carroll Shelby International Inc., (CSBI.PK) has introduced several new pieces of speed equipment to crank up the performance of the 5.4-liter Shelby GT500. The fresh product group includes a Shelby/ Whipple 3.4L Black Super Charger Tuner Kit, a Competition Heat Exchanger, and a Shelby GT500 Competition Intercooler Tank that can all be installed to any 2007-2012 Shelby GT500.

“Shelby Performance Parts can dramatically increase the capabilities of a current model generation Mustang or Shelby car,” said John Luft, president of Shelby American. “The parts group offers pieces engineered specifically for our world-class cars to make customers king of the road and the track.”

The Shelby/ Whipple 3.4L Black Supercharger Tuner Kit replaces the stock roots-type unit that can add up to 300 additional horsepower. The direct bolt-on system provides substantially higher boost levels (up to 30psi) at any RPM, while dramatically lowering discharge temperatures and parasitic loss. This Whipple Tuner Kit comes with a 3.5” pulley for approximately 17 psi of boost and will require a custom tune.

“This is currently the largest twin-screw system available for the 5.4 liter Ford engine,” added Robert Lane, director of Shelby Performance Parts. “In just a few hours, our package turns the Shelby GT500 into one of the most powerful street machines in the world.”

Big boost is only part of the equation when seeking ultimate speed with a supercharged engine. Whether the object is top speed in the standing mile or to shave that last second off a lap, keeping the intake air cool is essential. That is why Shelby Performance Parts has introduced a Competition Heat Exchanger complete with dual 11” fans to pull the maximum amount of air across the core.

“Heat is the enemy for both short term performance and long term reliability,” noted Lane. “The GT500’s onboard computer program will curb spark and timing when the engine exceeds optimal temperatures. Our new Competition Heat Exchanger was designed to negate that extra heat when an engine is pushed to its limits. This keeps all of the horsepower available at all times.”

To complement the functionality of the Competition Heat Exchanger, Shelby Performance Parts offers a Shelby GT500 Competition Intercooler Tank . With a larger capacity and a fuel cell style cap, ice or dry ice can quickly be added to the tank. The result is colder intake air temperatures and reduced risk of heat soak. The competition tank has an easy drain nozzle to expunge fluids once the ice melts for rapid replenishment.
